Tanya Anand, MD, MPH, FACS, is a clinical assistant professor of surgery with the University of Arizona Department of Surgery Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery. She is also the director of geriatric trauma within the division. Originally from Southern California, Dr. Anand attained her undergraduate degree from Loma Linda University and worked for several years as a licensed clinical laboratory scientist. She simultaneously completed her MPH, with an interest in health policy and epidemiology, at the University of Southern California. She then completed medical school, graduating magna cum laude, at St. George's University in Grenada, WI, followed by residency at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, CA. Her interest in trauma, acute care surgery, and critical care led her to complete a 2-year fellowship at the University of Arizona Division of Trauma in Tucson, Arizona.

Dr. Anand's research interests are diverse but revolve around improving all aspects of care of the initial acute management of the critically ill trauma, acute care, and burn patient. In particular, she is interested in understanding the impact of injury upon resuscitation and glycocalyx integrity in the critically ill trauma patient. She also has a passion for exploring avenues to improve hemorrhagic shock resuscitation and minimizing post-intubation hypotension in the Trauma Bay. In addition, Dr. Anand has significant interest in improving the resuscitation and care of the acutely ill geriatric patient and has created an inpatient management pathway for the frail older adult. Dr. Anand is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and obtained a certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support, among other clinical certifications. She is a member of multiple professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, Association of Women Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. 

Dr. Arpana Jain is a Burn Surgeon and Associate Medical Director at the Diane and Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center. She is also an Assistant Professor of surgery at University of Arizona and Creighton University. She is the director of Ambulatory care at the burn center as well as medical director of the Laser Program. She received her medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi followed by surgical training at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston and University of Kentucky. She completed Trauma, Critical care and Acute Care fellowships at University of Arizona and a Burn Surgery fellowship with emphasis on pediatric burns at University of California and Shriner’s Hospital of Northern California. She is pursuing an Executive MBA at University of Arizona. Her practice includes caring for patients suffering from both acute burn injury and late effects of burns, with a special focus on critically ill burn patients, reconstruction of burn scars and pediatric burn care. She has authored many journal articles, guidelines, and book chapters, and is a member of several international surgical societies. She has also authored medical education case studies on surgical conditions related to climate change.

Andrew Bernard is a native of Kentucky. He began his career as an EMT in a rural county and as an aeromedical dispatcher. He was educated entirely at the University of Kentucky, including undergraduate, medical school, residency in general surgery, a 2-year research fellowship and a two one-year fellowships in trauma and surgical critical care. He has almost 40 years of experience in EMS, emergency surgery and trauma. Dr. Bernard is currently Professor of Surgery, the Paul A. Kearney MD Endowed Chair in Trauma Surgery, and Chief of Acute Care Surgery at the UK College of Medicine. He is the Medical Director for UK’s adult level I trauma center. He is the Past President of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Dr. Bernard has received numerous teaching awards. Second only to caring for patients, Dr. Bernard’s greatest passion is teaching. 

Dr. Kaups received a BA in Biochemistry at Bethel University, St. Paul, Minnesota, and her medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago. Her general surgery internship and residency were completed at the MSU- Southwest Michigan Area Health Education Center, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Following residency, Dr. Kaups did a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, in Worcester, Massachusetts, followed by a year of research Dr. Kaups later completed an MSc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She was the Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at UCSF Fresno for 19 years, and is the director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Community Regional Medical Center, Fresno, CA, one of the busiest Level I Trauma Centers in California. She is the current President of the Western Trauma Association, immediate past-President of the Surgical Critical Care Program Directors Society, immediate past Chair of the Trauma, Burn, and Surgical Critical Care Board of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and chairs the Patient Assessment Committee for the AAST. Along with Drs. Amy Hildreth and Deb Stein, Dr Kaups is serving to develop and implement the Entrustable Professional Activity assessment tools for Surgical Critical Care. Among her other interests are global surgery; she has had the opportunity to serve in South Sudan, Benin, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Albania and Ethiopia and is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East Central and South Africa. 

Dr. Kunac received her medical degree in 2005, completed her General Surgery Residency at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston New Jersey in 2010, and went on to complete her Surgical Critical Care Fellowship in 2011 at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School. She is board-certified in Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Kunac joined University of Arizona and Banner University Medical Center in August of 2024 from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, where she held several leadership positions and brings with her a wealth of experience. Her leadership roles include Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency, Program Director of the General Surgery Residency, Vice Chair of Education, and Vice Chair of Veteran Affairs. Her leadership extends beyond academic medicine, as she also served as the Co-Director of Surgical ICU at University Hospital, Newark, NJ, and later as the Chief of Surgical Critical Care for the Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System. She currently serves as Associate Clerkship Director at the University of Arizona and Associate Trauma Medical Director at Banner University Medical Center South Campus in Tucson. 

Dr. Russell is a leader at the University of Utah Health - Primary Children’s Hospital serving as the Trauma Medical Director, Utah Pediatric Trauma Network Medical Director, Utah Pectus Program Medical Director, and Pulmonary Hypoplasia Program Medical Director. She is leading telehealth initiatives to lower costs for families related to travel in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. She is involved in a multi-institutional research collaborative, The Western Pediatric Research Consortium, to push the forefront of rigorous research in pediatric surgical conditions and is also on the Fetal Surgery Team at her institution. Dr. Russell has also been active in the field of global surgery. In 2017 she spent two months in South Sudan with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). She has completed multiple surgical missions in Haiti, Guatemala, and Tanzania. She was also on a surgical team that responded in Nepal after the 2015 Earthquake. She intends to continue her efforts in global surgery throughout her career. Dr. Russell earned a B.A. degree in visual art at Brown University and earned her M.D. at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California where she was elected AOA. 

Martin Zielinski is a Professor and Chief of Trauma, Bariatrics and Acute Care Surgery of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. In these roles, he oversees adult trauma, emergency general surgery, bariatric surgery, and surgical critical care at all Baylor sites including Ben Taub General Hospital, Baylor St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Administration Hospital in Houston, TX. Dr. Zielinski received his undergraduate and medical degree at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He then went on to complete his residency at Mayo Clinic where he advanced to the first Professor of Surgery in Mayo’s trauma division. His main interests include leadership development, practice standardization for emergency surgical diseases, optimizing the care of patients with small bowel obstruction, and developing novel therapeutic approaches to hemorrhagic shock resuscitation. He has published over 180 peer reviewed manuscripts, authored more than a dozen book chapters, and most recently, is the co-editor of The Acute Management of Surgical Disease textbook. 

Dr. McGonigal has been interested in trauma care since his undergraduate years at Oberlin College in Ohio. He graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1982. He completed his residency training in General Surgery, with an emphasis on trauma care, at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He was recruited to build the Trauma Center at Penn in 1987 and subsequently established the Level I adult and pediatric trauma programs at Regions Hospital in 1983 and 2009. After 30 years as the trauma medical director, he is now the Emeritus Director of Trauma Services and continues to provide his trauma expertise at the local, state, and national levels. 

Nicholas Namias, MD, MBA is a professor of surgery at The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. He holds the Robert Zeppa Endowed Chair in Trauma Surgery and is also the Medical Director of the Ryder Trauma Center and Chief of the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery in the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery. Dr. Namias received his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Piscataway, New Jersey. He completed the General Surgery Residency and fellowships in surgical critical care and trauma at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Dr. Namias has also earned a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. He is board certified in surgery and in surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery. His clinical activity is in the areas of trauma, burns, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. He has research interests in trauma surgery, resuscitation, and surgical infection. 

Dr. Soe-Lin is an Associate Professor of surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine - Phoenix and a faculty staff at St Joseph's Hospital & Medical Center since September of 2019. He works clinically as a full-time surgeon in the fields of trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. Dr. Soe-Lin completed his medical school education at Georgetown University School of Medicine after undergraduate and graduate physiology degrees at McGill University in Canada where he was born, and subsequently completed his general surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio. He completed a two year fellowship in trauma surgery and surgical critical care at the Ryder Trauma Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Dr. Soe-Lin is an early career academic surgeon who has over one million dollars in intra and extramural funded grants with the St Joseph's Foundation, the Flinn Foundation, the Barrow Neurological Foundation, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Surgeons (SAGES), and others. He has won multiple teaching awards at Creighton and at Case Western Reserve University for his work with medical students and surgery residents, and is an active educator as the Creighton Clinical Simulation Director working with the St Joseph's Hospital Learning Institute Simulation Center. He is most passionate about surgical simulation education and is a co-founder of the Knowledge Donor program, a transformative platform for ultra high fidelity surgical and procedural education and innovation. 

Dr. Philip C. Spinella is a professor in the Departments of Surgery and Critical Care Medicine, Co-Director of the Trauma and Transfusion Medicine Research Center and Associate Medical Director of the Center for Military Medicine Research at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Spinella served 15 years in the US Army and separated as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2007. He is a veteran of the Iraq War, where he received a Bronze Star and the Combat Medic Badge for providing care under fire. Dr. Spinella is a well-established clinical trialist, who has been funded by the US Department of Defense, BARDA, DARPA and the National Institutes of Health. He has completed or is currently conducting definitive trials on transfusion topics to include RBC storage age, tranexamic acid in trauma, cold stored platelets, and whole blood. He has published over 350 manuscripts and 21 chapters and is the editor for a textbook on the topic of trauma resuscitation. Dr. Spinella has also participated in, organized research symposia for, or provided external review of research programs for the FDA, NIH, DoD, Homeland Security, and the Department of Health and Human Services. He has also participated on a committee for the National Academy of Sciences to develop recommendations for a national trauma system in the US. 

Dr. Jordan Weinberg received his medical degree from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and completed general surgery residency at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, followed by surgical critical care/trauma fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He joined Dignity Health Medical Group in 2016 as Trauma Medical Director at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Weinberg is board certified in general surgery, surgical critical care, and neurocritical care. As Professor and Chair of Surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine Phoenix Campus, he oversees the education of both medical students and surgery residents. 

Collin Stewart, MD, FACS, is originally from west Texas and grew up in southeast Arkansas. He attended Texas A&M University where he obtained undergraduate degrees in biomedical science and forensic entomology. He then completed his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. He completed his general surgery residency at the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Consortium in Las Vegas, Nevada, followed by a fellowship in surgical critical care and acute care surgery at the University of Arizona. Afterward he remained at the University of Arizona with Department of Surgery in the Division Trauma, Critical Care, Burn, and Emergency Surgery. He has previously served as the pediatric trauma medical director and is currently the trauma medical director for the adult level one trauma center as well as the associate program director for the acute care surgery fellowship. He enjoys being outdoors, running and cycling, as well as spending time with his wife and three children. 

I graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed my Surgical Residency at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix/University of Arizona Phoenix. I completed my Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Parkland/UT Southwestern and have been a Trauma/ Acute Care Surgeon at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix since 2022 where I started and grew our robotic trauma/acute care program.

Patrick Goodman has been a Licensed Professional Counselor for the past twenty five years and currently is the Trauma Therapist for the Trauma Department at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

He provides clinical consultation and supportive services as a member of the Trauma Team working with youth and families who have experienced a traumatic hospitalization to meet their counseling and therapeutic support needs while they recover at Phoenix Children’s’ Hospital and after their inpatient stay.

In addition to being a licensed professional counselor, he has worked as a certified Infant/Toddler Mental health Specialist, a Registered Play Therapist, and a Certified Crisis Worker and assisted in facilitating the parent and caregiver grief groups through the New Song Center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Gaby Iskander, MD, MS, FACS began his surgical career in Wisconsin at Marshfield Clinic and Ministry St. Joseph Hospital where he became the medical director for trauma and the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). He continued his career as a practicing physician and physician leader in Michigan at Spectrum Health, simultaneously serving as chief of acute care surgery, trauma director and the SICU medical director. Dr Iskander has also been heavily involved in medical education throughout his career serving in various leadership roles including clerkship director, residency program associate director, and core faculty. He enjoys working with and mentoring the next generation of physicians including medical students, residents, and fellows. Dr. Iskander has been active in leadership roles at the state, regional and national levels within his areas of expertise. While in Wisconsin, he served as chair of the state and regional Trauma Advisory Council and was instrumental in the development of trauma, burn and emergency medical services (EMS) policy related to disaster management; he assumed those same roles when he moved to Michigan. On a national level, Dr. Iskander works as a reviewer for the American College of Surgeons for verification of trauma centers. Dr. Iskander is also active in the community, serving on the boards of clinical and charitable organizations. He enjoys teaching as well as outdoor activities including soccer, tennis, pickleball and basketball.

Dr. Jamshidi is a board-certified pediatric and general surgeon who has been with Phoenix Children’s Hospital since 2012. Originally from Northern California, he earned degrees in physics and chemistry before completing his medical degree, surgical residency, and specialized training in fetal and pediatric surgery at institutions including UC San Diego, Harvard University, the University of Colorado, UC San Francisco, and the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. He is currently the Director of Endocrine Surgery and the Assistant Program Director of the Mayo Clinic–PCH Pediatric Surgery Fellowship. Dr. Jamshidi’s clinical interests span endocrine and thyroid disease, thoracic and vascular conditions, pediatric and adult trauma, oncology, and complex minimally invasive surgery. His research focuses on medical device design, surgical education, and clinical outcomes, and he remains dedicated to advancing medical knowledge through teaching and mentorship. In addition, he is actively involved in global health, maintaining long-term collaborations in Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. Outside of medicine, Dr. Jamshidi enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and children, combining his passion for nature and healthcare through global health and wilderness medicine initiatives.

Dr. Sucher attended surgical residency and fellowship at the University of Texas- Houston Health Sciences Center. He has a wide variety of professional experiences, including having served active duty in the Army, working for Eli-Lilly as a biochemist, and being a computer programmer for a healthcare software company that he co-founded.

In 2013, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, joining the Acute Care Surgical Specialists trauma surgery group. Since that time, he has served as the Medical Director of Trauma at Deer Valley hospital. He has published multiple peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters on healthcare technology, abdominal wall hernias, geriatric trauma, hemorrhagic shock and surgical rib fixation.

He is the past president of the Arizona Trauma Association and has served as a subject matter expert for Texas A&M Engineering Extension Services (TEEX) on mass casualties in bombing incidents, as a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the Arizona Coalition for Healthcare Emergency Response (AzCHER), and has served as a member of the board of governors for the Arizona Emergency Medical Systems (AEMS) Committee.

Dr. Mangram is the Senior Trauma Critical Care Director of a private multi-specialty group Valley Surgical Clinics and Acute Care Surgical Specialists. This group is composed of physicians who specialize in general surgery, trauma, advanced laparoscopy, robotics and medical/surgical critical care.

Dr. Mangram is the Senior Medical Director of Trauma Acute Care at HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Mangram is the appointed Program Director for the HonorHealth John C. Lincoln General Surgery Residency. She completed her general surgery residency and fellowship in surgical critical care at University of Texas Health Sciences Center (Hermann Hospital) Houston, Texas.

Dr. Mangram has devoted herself to improving trauma care through advocacy, surgical and critical care research, education and community service. She has a special interest in trauma patients over the age of 60, and has created G-60 Trauma. She is a member to multiple prestigious medical societies including; American Association of Surgical Trauma (AAST), Arizona Trauma Association (ATA), Western Trauma Association (WTA) and Southwest Surgical Congress (SWSC). Dr. Mangram has recently been nominated to the ACS Committee on Trauma (term beginning in 2018) and chaired the new Committee on Trauma Geriatric Trauma Guidelines. She has published numerous scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Mangram is most recognized world-wide for her landmark work at CDC: Guidelines for the Prevention of Surgical Site Infection (1999), and recently for her work in geriatric trauma (G60).

Lastly, Dr. Mangram has taken on the new challenge of creating an acute care robotic emergency general surgery curriculum. Dr. Mangram began performing robotic surgery in 2018. She has continued to grow her robotic skills and truly believes that robotic surgery is the future. All of Dr. Mangram’s residents graduate with robotic certification.

Dr. Patel strives to help patients achieve optimal health through compassionate and expert care. He completed his fellowship in Surgical Critical Care Medicine at the University of California San Diego Trauma/Critical in 1999, following a general surgery residency at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in 1997. He earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health in 1992. Dr. Patel is board certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care by the American Board of Surgery (2024).
